DC as a Service Approach to High Power Commercial Vehicle Charging Systems

The IEEE P2030.13 draft standard (https://standards.ieee.org/project/2030_13.html ) “Guide for Electric Transportation Fast Charging Station Management System Functional Specification” continues the P2030 series of P2030.8 on AC microgrids, P2030.10 on DC microgrids and P2030.11 on DERMS. Pilot fleets of Class 3-Class 8 electric trucks have been deployed with new charging coupler standards aimed at 1500vdc/3000Adc to enable megawatt level power transfer. Power systems, specifically utility interconnections and site specific storage/active load management will be challenged to supply multiple vehicles charging collectively at greater than 1MW. This presentation will cover issues, standards, challenges and gap on designing EV charging systems for many vehicles charging at depot or other locations that require MW+ power levels. The DC-as-a-Service business case will be covered as well as current work on IEEE/SAE standards supporting these types of charging installations.
