SUMMARY:EMC Society-Chicago Chapter Annual Oktoberfest Meeting
DESCRIPTION:IEEE EMC Society-Chicago Chapter Annual Oktoberfest Meeting at Elite Electronic Engineering \nAgenda\n• 6:00 – 7:00pm Social Hour (includes Oktoberfest food and drinks)\n• 7:00 – 7:30pm Chapter Announcements\n• 7:30 – 8:15pm Technical Presentation \nSpeakers:\nNick Koeller – “Diagnosis of Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Emissions” \nNick will present the process by which he analyzes SMPS RF Emissions using a combination of EMC chamber measurements and Near-field probing on the bench to determine appropriate countermeasures based on noise characteristics\nNick is the Lead EMC Engineer at E3 Compliance which specializes in EMC & SIPI design\, simulation\, pre-compliance testing and diagnostics. He received his B.S.E in Electrical Engineering from Grand Valley State University and is currently pursuing his M.S.E in Electrical and Computer Engineering at GVSU. Nick participates in the industrial collaboration with GVSU at the EMC Center. \nProfessor Bogdan Adamczyk – “Shielding – Radiation from Apertures” \nAn ideal shielded enclosure\, would have an infinite conductivity\, no apertures\, seams\, or cable penetrations\, and would completely surround an electronic product. Practical shielding enclosures have finite conductivity\, contain apertures\, seams\, or cable penetrations and cannot completely achieve such isolation. Apertures (slots or holes) reduce the effectiveness of the shield. Babinet’s principle\, provides a way to analyze the radiation from slot antennas leading to the conclusion that apertures can be as effective radiators as antennas of the same dimensions.\nDr. Bogdan Adamczyk is professor and director of the EMC Center at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) where he develops EMC educational material and teaches EMC certificate courses for industry. He works closely with E3 Compliance\, an on-site industrial partner of GVSU. He is an iNARTE certified EMC Master Design Engineer. Prof. Adamczyk is the author of two textbooks: “Foundations of Electromagnetic Compatibility with Practical Applications” (Wiley\, 2017) and “Principles of Electromagnetic Compatibility: Laboratory Exercises and Lectures” (Wiley\, 2024). He has taught numerous EMC courses for industry and has authored over 100 publications on EMC education\, measurement\, and testing\, and presented hardware demonstrations at several IEEE EMC Symposia. Prof. Adamczyk is a past senior contributor to the Incompliance Magazine writing a monthly column “EMC Concepts Explained” (2017-2026). \n

SUMMARY:Modeling and Simulation of Inverter Based Resources and their Controls - a four hour virtual seminar. Earn 4 PDH's.
DESCRIPTION:As the electric grid undergoes rapid transformation\, inverter-based resources (IBRs) are playing an increasingly central role in power system performance. The accelerating deployment of renewable generation—particularly wind and solar—combined with the growing demand from large-scale data centers\, is driving unprecedented levels of IBR penetration across the grid. This shift toward power electronics–dominated resources introduces new dynamics that differ fundamentally from traditional synchronous machines. \nUnderstanding how to model\, analyze\, and control these resources is essential for maintaining system reliability and stability. IBRs rely on fast-acting control systems\, and their interactions with the grid can introduce complex behaviors\, particularly in weak system conditions or during disturbances. \nThis training session provides a structured and practical introduction to the modeling and control of IBRs in modern power systems. The course begins with a review of control system fundamentals\, including key concepts such as transfer functions\, stability analysis techniques (Bode\, Root Locus\, and Nyquist)\, and small-signal behavior. It then connects these principles to real-world power system applications\, including frequency response\, voltage control\, and power system stabilization. \nParticipants will explore common instability mechanisms associated with high IBR penetration\, including grid-related interactions (e.g.\, weak grid conditions\, sub-synchronous control interactions\, and harmonics)\, IBR-to-IBR interactions\, and interactions with synchronous machines. The training also provides an overview of current industry modeling requirements\, including relevant NERC reliability standards and recent regulatory developments\, along with guidance on model selection and the use of both phasor-domain and EMT simulation tools. \nDesigned for engineers involved in system planning\, operations\, and interconnection studies\, this session combines foundational theory with practical insights to help participants better understand and address the challenges associated with integrating IBRs into today’s evolving power systems. \n\,
