Distinguished Lecture

Topic: From Federated to Fog Learning: Expanding the Frontier of Model Training over Contemporary Wireless Network Systems

Abstract

Fog learning is an emerging paradigm for optimizing the orchestration of artificial intelligence services over contemporary network systems. Different from existing distributed techniques such as federated learning, fog learning emphasizes intrinsically in its design the unique node, network, and data properties encountered in today’s fog networks that span computing elements from the edge to the cloud.

Speaker

Christopher G. Brinton (S’08, M’16, SM’20) is the Elmore Rising Star Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Purdue University. His research interest is at the intersection of networking, communications, and machine learning, specifically in fog/edge network intelligence, distributed machine learning, and AI/ML-inspired wireless network optimization.

Energy harvesting IoT Devices: A 3GPP Standardization Perspective

Ambient internet of things (IoT) is the network of devices which harvest energy from ambient sources for powering their communication. After decades of research on operation
of these devices, Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has started discussing energy harvesting technology in cellular networks to support massive deployment of IoT devices at low
operational cost. This talk provides a timely update on 3GPP studies on ambient energy harvesting devices. The talk emphasizes that the AIoT technology will require a new system design approach as compared to New Radio (NR) system design in 5G as AIoT devices are low cost, small form factor devices and don’t possess the device capabilities of NR devices.

Multi-RIS-empowered smart wireless networks: Speaker – Prof. George Alexandropoulos

The upcoming 6G pushes the 5G performance indicators to unprecedented levels, envisioning up to THz frequencies, devices with embedded sensing capabilities, and native artificial intelligence. These challenging features are expected to become a reality around 2030 and with a strong green footprint. In this talk, we will elaborate around the emerging technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces and its efficient configuration optimization via state-of-the-art sensing-capable hardware architectures. We will discuss recent results on the capacity characterization of Multi-RIS-empowered point-to-point and multiple-access channels, and then present a reinforcement learning approach for the orchestration of multi-RIS-empowered smart wireless environments. We will also discuss the latest considerations of the latter environments for sensing-aided communications and distributed sensing
