Reliability is a key aspect of utility performance. It is measured by utilities and reported to regulators with the intent to track performance and drive improvement. We will look at the metrics that have traditionally been used and how they have impacted the industry.  The discussion will also look forward at the best metrics to measure reliability in the future.

What can be done when reliability metrics seem to plateau? We will explore some techniques that can be used to provide continued reliability improvement, such as, increase line segmentation and lateral protection.  In recent years there have been growing expectations of reliability from electricity distribution grids as well as key changes in how electricity is both generated and used. As electricity users become more reliant on electricity for digital services and transportation, the importance of reliability is growing, and customers increasingly expect high reliability.  Utility reliability performance will continue to be a critical area of utility, regulator, and customer focus.
