The meeting was held at UL Corporate Headquarters in Northbrook IL and via Skype. The attendees enjoyed a light dinner and networking until the meeting began. PSES Chicago Chair, Harry Jones conducted the business meeting which was immediately followed by a presentation on functional safety of electronics.

The presenter, Nicholas Alexiades, Business Development Manager at UL earned his MS from the University of Pittsburgh in Electrical & Computer Engineering, and specialized in embedded systems, software and control systems. He is the global technical and business leader for UL-based in Northbrook, IL. He has 15+ years in application and embedded software development, along with systems engineering and cybersecurity. His technical expertise includes UL 1998, UL 991, UL 60730-1, IEC 61508, ISO 13849-1, ISO 26262, and other related standards.

The meeting attendees, consisting of product safety engineers, commercial and industrial manufacturers, and design engineers enjoyed the very interesting and informative presentation and participated in lively conversation following the presentation well after the meeting was adjourned. The presentation topics included a detailed explanation of what functional safety is, why it’s important as well as why and how it has evolved over the years. There was also a review of the functional safety standards and principals, including hazard and risk assessment, quality management, measures to address random failures and measures to address systematic failures.
