IEEE Chicago Section Student Branch Center
The IEEE-Chicago Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) serves the student engineering and computer professionals of in the Chicago area through it’s Student Activities Committee. As part of the Chicago Section, Student Branches provide a local interface to the worldwide network of the IEEE. In addition, the Student Branches organize technical presentations, social events, and networking opportunities of interest to their engineering and computer student members.
IEEE SPAx – Student Professional Awareness
SPAx (Student Professional Awareness) is a global IEEE program designed to help students bridge the gap between academic learning and professional success. Established in 1976, SPAx provides student branches with resources to host events that enhance professional awareness through talks, panels, workshops, and hands-on activities. The “x” in SPAx represents flexibility—events can focus on professional skills, leadership, innovation, ethics, public policy, or humanitarian challenges. Students design their own SPAx activities with support from IEEE and regional coordinators.
SPAx Focus Areas
- Professional Integrity – Applying ethics in a globalized and fast-changing engineering world.
- Personal Skills – Building time management, leadership, and financial literacy skills.
- Engineers & Public Policy – Engaging in shaping public policy and governance.
- Leadership in Professional Organizations – Becoming impactful leaders in societies like IEEE.
- Practice of Innovation – Turning creativity and training into real-world innovation.
- The Art of Communication – Mastering storytelling, presentations, and public communication.
- Humanitarian and Grand Challenges – Leveraging engineering to solve global problems.
How to Launch a SPAx
- Propose your event idea through the SPAx portal.
- Connect with your Regional SPAx Coordinator for guidance.
- Secure speakers, sponsors, and student engagement.
- Execute your event with IEEE resources and support.
- Report your event and share outcomes with the IEEE community.
